NAZIS SEIZE FAMOUS WINES
The Mirror (Perth,), Saturday 4 January 1941, page 9
Sir Charles Mendl, late Press Attache to the British Embassy in Paris, had a remarkable collection of rare wines, which have been requisitioned by the Nazis in Paris.
Mendl collection was rated as one of the finest private collections in the world, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor being among the many famous people who have tasted its wines.
Second only to Mendl collection, were the private wine cellars of the members of the Rothschild family. These have already been seized by the Nazis.
Mendl cellar contained some of the rarest and eldest bottles in France, Sir Charles being considered one of the greatest living authorities on modern wines. Both the Mendl town houses in Paris. and their country estate, the Villa Trianon, on the edge of the park of the Versailles castle, where Lady Mendl’s famous garden parties were held each summer have been occupied by the Germans.
